What Is PRP Injection?

Most people have heard about PRP injection and have questions about its effectiveness, administration, and benefits. So, what is PRP injection? PRP injection is a platelet-rich plasma injection with a high concentration of platelets and plasma. Notably, blood contains four elements: white and red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. PRP contains 94%of platelets, which help in significant healing. PRP is a treatment for several orthopedic conditions such as muscle, ligament, tendon injury, arthritis, and fractures. PRP has a unique procedure when being administered.

How to Administer the PRP Injection

PRP therapy is used to enhance the power of the platelets. So, concentrating and collecting the platelets into one injection magnifies the platelets’ strength in the blood. However, it requires an effective procedure to be successful and to eliminate any risks involved. Here are the steps of administering the PRP injection.

Step 1: Collect Patients’ Blood

The blood collected should be around 15 to 50 milliliters (two ounces).

Step 2: Centrifuge the Blood

The blood is then put in a centrifuge machine that quickly separates the liquid and solid parts of the blood, which are red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

Step 3: Process and Collect the Platelets

The platelets are collected in a syringe to be administered immediately.

Step 4: Inject PRP into the Injured Part

PRP injection is then injected into the desired part, which is the injured part. An ultrasound may be used to determine the nature, physical condition, or location of an injury. The injection does not offer immediate relief from pain. This may take weeks, but all the injuries will completely heal by the end of a month. PRP injection has several benefits.

Benefits of PRP Injection

The PRP process is simple and doesn’t require any hospitalization to perform the procedure. Also, patients going through the PRP therapy procedure can resume their daily activities soonest. Here are some of the benefits patients can benefit from PRP injection.

It Is Safe

All the elements used in the injection procedure come from a human’s own elements. There are no rejections since the cell therapy is taken from the patients’ bodies. It is commonly used for effective wound healing in sports.

It Treats Delicate And Difficult-To-Reach Areas.

This means of treatment is very effective since it helps treat unreachable areas for lasers. It also helps treat severe degenerations and injuries.

It Is Effective

This type of treatment is effective therapy compared to surgery. Patients are assured that they will not be associated with surgery treatment’s potential risks and complications. Complications like bleeding, clot formation, and damage of adjacent tissues are avoidable by using this non-surgical treatment.

Promotes Natural Healing

PRP injection is a very reliable form of treatment. It promotes the natural healing of the damaged tissues since it has the potential to heal tissues without the need for surgery. This treatment is primarily used in sports.

Some risks and complications come with PRP injections, as other treatments may have. These risks include:

  • Increased pain at the injection site

There may be a lot of pain in the area where the PRP injection has been administered. This pain may stay for at least a few weeks before disappearing.

  • Infection

The same as other means of treatment, PRP has some infections.

  • Tissue damage

There is a lot of tissue damage that occurs due to mistakes that doctors may make during the procedure.

  • Injuring to the neighboring nerves

PRP injection that is done without proper supervision or even use of ultrasound can make the one administering the injection touch other nerves near the injured place.
